Practice Notes

Updated: Feb 23, 2020

In my first post, I mentioned "Practice Notes." It's a common practice for many music teachers to make a list of things to practice throughout the week and I have my own template that I use. Feel free to steal this idea and make it work for you! In my template, I chose to separate technique and repertoire, but I also often draw arrows from the technique over to the repertoire side to say "use this technique in this spot specifically." I also include a practice log so students can check off the days they practice and set personal goals.

I find it very helpful to use these notes to because it gives students guidance on how to make their practice focused and intentional. We are all pulled in so many directions throughout the week, it is often difficult to make time for practice. Then when we do start practicing, sometimes we are so exhausted and distracted that we don't remember what we are supposed to be doing during our practice time. Keeping these notes in a folder with their music creates some order out of the chaos and motivates students to achieve weekly goals.

Here is an example of a practice note filled out for an imaginary student. Teachers, what would you add or change for your own studio?

Happy Practicing!
